Have you got funding for an invention, but don’t know where to go next? Or perhaps you are quite far down the process and could do with some help from other experienced inventors on a particular aspect of the process? Then you’ve come to the right place!
Whether inventing is new to you, or you’re a seasoned professional with many patents under your belt, we’re here to help.
Here are some simple steps to get you thinking about the different stages of the process and help your design become a reality:
-
Explore the market
Very few inventions are completely one-of-a-kind, and even those that are, will likely need to compete with something else when it comes to market. That’s not a problem though – imagine a world where the only mobile phone available was a Blackberry – but exploring what’s out there and the potential size of the market will help you to be practical and realistic about your idea and guide you in the process.
Some things to consider:
- Who is your audience?
- What other products are there that do something similar?
- What does your idea do differently, or better, than what’s already there?
- We can help!
-
Build a prototype
Once you’ve thought about how your idea fits into the market, and what it could offer – it’s time to get designing!
There are a number of ways to prototype your invention, and you will likely go through a number of different prototypes throughout your designing process. From sketches, to 3d renders to physical prototyping, it’s important to not rush this stage or else your product might not work the way you dreamt it would!
Consider:
- Does it work?
- What materials are needed?
- Can you upscale production and how much would it cost?
- We can help!
-
Get feedback
Very, and we mean very, few designs are perfect first time round.
Whether or not you think it is or not though, once you have a working prototype it’s important to get feedback on your design to make sure it’s suitable for your intended users.
- Getting another perspective is always helpful.
- You can never have too much user testing.
- Measure feedback objectively and analytically (it’s not personal!)

-
Get production ready
So, you’ve tested your product with dozens of focus group and revised your design to perfection.
Now the real hard work begins!
UKCA testing, CE certification, manufacturing quotes, minimum order quantities, logistics, packaging, supply chains …
For many inventors, this stage can be the hardest part; but it’s essential for getting your product into market.
- Make sure you have tested against all relevant standards for your product/market.
- Get multiple manufacturing and logistics quotes if possible.
- Consider potential future markets (e.g. international) and their regulations/standards.
- We can help!
-
Launch!
With everything in place, you can launch your product and begin to sell!
As with everything though, that’s a lot easier said than done.
Consider:
- Where will you store your products now they’re made?
- What channels will you use to sell your product?
- How will people hear about your new product?
- We can help!
