Digital Marketing Manager, Toby Fairclough, discusses how a robotic vacuum cleaner changed his life as part of our new “Inspirational Designs” series.
Robotic vacuum cleaners have been around for a few years now, but did you know that they were first thought of back in 1956? Robert A. Heinlein wrote in The Door into Summer “Basically it was just a better vacuum cleaner… It went quietly looking for dirt… it would go to its stall and soak up a quick charge”.
Fast forward 66 years and you can buy relatively inexpensive machines online which do just that!
Using a combination of sensors, artificial intelligence, deep learning and motors – a good robotic vacuum cleaner will travel around your house, picking up dirt along the way, and then go back to its dock to recharge. The only thing you need to do is remember to empty it!
But how is that inspiring?
Automation, automation, automation!
At its heart, I believe the purpose of technology is to make things easier. And nothing is easier than doing nothing – which is where automation comes in. The pinnacle of technology, in my eyes, is for a system to do its job without human input. And that’s what I find so inspiring.
What does the future hold?
Automated dish washing… Automated fridge replenishing… Automated blog writing… Oh, hang on a minute!
