Innovative technology is changing the way we see and live life in almost every way. From new methods of accessing the world such as Extend, Virtual and Augmented Reality (ER, VR & AR). To new ways of living it, with advancements in prosthetics, genomics and medical sciences.
As industrial design specialists in the safety, medical and consumer markets, we know first-hand the sort of impact advancements in technology can have. Healthcare, for example, is one area where innovative technology is making a tremendous impact. Literally improving and saving people’s lives. Like with our award-winning two-way filtering respirator, the Easimask 200R.
RPE
Respiratory Protective Equipment – RPE – is used to protect wearers from hazardous substances in the atmosphere. As the COVID-19 pandemic took hold across the world, it quickly became clear that RPE could be used to help prevent the cross-infection of the coronavirus in hospitals.
However, not all RPE is equal, and not all RPE will protect the user from every situation.
In most cases, RPE is used to protect the wearer from the surrounding environment. But with COVID it became apparent that patients also needed to be protected from their potentially infected carers. To help minimise the risk of cross-contamination.
Although some disposable respirators (FFP3 masks) filter air breathed in and out. Many hospitals began using half-masks to cut down on waste and reduce costs. Half-masks, however, traditionally have exhalation valves – meaning that breath expressed by the user is not filtered. Potentially infecting any patients or fellow staff they come into close contact with.
Advanced Respiratory Technology
Design Reality have designed and developed countless respirators over the years, including the British Armed Force’s GSR and 3M-Scott Safety’s AV-3000. So we were in a unique place to see and respond to this new challenge the world was facing with RPE in light of the pandemic.
Our response?
We designed the first two-way filtering, reusable, half-mask respirator specifically for protecting healthcare workers in the frontline – the Easimask 200R.
Available now for Own Branding, this design has been recognised internationally for its innovation in healthcare, having received four awards in the categories of Product Innovation, Product Design, Health & Safety and COVID Response.
Working with a Design Partner
No matter how big (or small) your team is, working with a Design Consultancy Agency is always a good idea when it comes to developing a medical device.
With decades of experience, our award-winning team of experts can help with any stage of the process – from prototyping to production, concept to compliance. Wherever you are in the process, working with experienced professional designers removed from the process can help speed up the process, spot potential errors and improve your designs.
ISO Verified
As part of our long-term commitment to design quality and assurance, Design Reality are ISO 13485 certified – the internationally recognised standard for medical device quality management. As part of this, we deliver regulatory compliant development programmes for medical devices. Suitable for healthcare companies across Europe.
By working with a compliant partner, medical design companies can minimise their time and development costs. By integrating an external development partner into their own quality management systems.
