It’s no secret that STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) has traditionally been thought of as a ‘boys club’.
At Design Reality though, we are proud to be standing up against this stereotype.
Not only is the company itself owned by a woman, we have women represented in every level of the business. From directors to designers, assistants to apprentices.
So to celebrate International Women’s Day we asked some of our colleagues what it means for them to be a woman in tech.
Excitement
Being a woman in tech is exciting and fulfilling. My enthusiasm for my passion in tech means I can confidently use my voice and speak my thoughts and ideas. To be heard and use my voice to make a positive impact is very special to me. Especially as a female student designer.

Innovation
Being surrounded by such innovative minds you can’t help but feel admiration towards them. Women are underrepresented in a lot of positions in STEM fields. However, at Design Reality we don’t have that, we have women at all levels to point to and say ‘I want to be like her’, ‘I want that kind of job’, or ‘I can really see myself doing that’.
Enterprises need a varied population. In order to provide new, pioneering, and exciting ideas and perceptions. Women are smart, inventive, creative, strong, resourceful, and powerful. So let us bring our experiences and ideas to the table to be heard.
In summary, I think James Brown said it best when he said: “It’s a man’s world, but it would be nothing, nothing, without a woman or a girl”

Diversity
On my road to leadership within STEM, I have used my passion and perseverance to overcome equality issues in the past. Now as the MD at Design Reality, I am empowering all of our team to strive and achieve their goals.
Having worked in STEM for many years, I have experienced an increase of women progressing in this industry. And I believe that introducing diversity into organisations results in dynamic, high achieving teams. Here at Design Reality, we are continuing to grow our teams with exceptional talent within our organisation at all levels and advocate equality.
Mel Randall
Managing Director
I personally find working in STEM very satisfying. I’m able to contribute towards the progress of civilisation with creative and innovative solutions. Every STEM field encompasses such a broad spectrum of potential career paths.
My advice to women who want to go into STEM is to go for it and be confident in your abilities. You are just as capable as the men surrounding you!
